Residents of Tungar Haki community in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State are reportedly fleeing their homes amid fears of a possible bandit attack following reports that soldiers deployed to protect the area have withdrawn.
The reported development has heightened anxiety among residents, who fear that the absence of the troops could leave their community vulnerable to attacks, abductions and displacement.
As of Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Stone Reporters News could not independently verify the reported withdrawal of soldiers from Tungar Haki or establish whether an alternative security arrangement had been put in place.
The development comes days after residents of Bindin and neighbouring communities in Maru Local Government Area protested the reported withdrawal of military personnel following deadly bandit attacks. On October 7, residents reportedly blocked an army convoy to prevent troops from leaving, expressing fears that their communities would be exposed to further violence.
The incident in Maru highlights the growing concerns among residents of rural communities in Zamfara over the availability and continuity of security protection.
In a separate development, the Nigerian Army announced on September 30 that it had operationalised three new infantry battalions in Zamfara State to strengthen its presence and improve its response to security threats. The units were established in Bakura, Kaura Namoda and Anka.
However, residents of Tungar Haki are now seeking reassurance that their community will not be left without adequate protection.
The Nigerian Army and Zamfara State Police Command should clarify whether troops were withdrawn from the area and explain what security measures are in place to protect residents.
For the affected community, the immediate concern is preventing an attack and ensuring that families can remain in their homes without fear.
