The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Kingsley Odo, who allegedly travelled from Anambra State to Oyo State to avenge the death of his brother.

The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol during a stop-and-search operation along Ife Road while travelling in a commercial bus, according to the police.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olushola Olayinka, said the officers discovered a locally made firearm and a cartridge during a search of the suspect. He said preliminary questioning indicated that Odo had travelled to the state with the intention of carrying out a revenge attack.

Speaking during questioning, Odo reportedly said he had been working in Benue State since 2021 when he received information that his brother, who was schooling in Awka, Anambra State, had been killed.

He said he returned after learning of his brother’s death and that his mother died a few weeks later. According to his account, he subsequently received information that the person he believed was responsible for his brother’s death was living in a Yoruba-speaking state.

Odo said he decided to locate the person but did not know the exact location before he was intercepted by the police while travelling towards Oyo State.

Asked about the recovered firearm, the suspect reportedly said he purchased it from a friend for ₦20,000. He also admitted to belonging to the Vikings confraternity when questioned about cult affiliation.

The police said the suspect was undergoing further investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged plot, verify his claims and determine whether other individuals were involved.

The command commended the officers involved in the operation, saying the arrest had helped avert a possible violent incident.

As of the latest reports, the police had not announced the conclusion of their investigation or any court proceedings against the suspect. The allegation remains subject to investigation, and the suspect is entitled to the presumption of innocence under the law.
