The Oyo State Police Command has arrested six suspected armed robbers following a five-week intelligence-gathering operation in Ibadan, recovering five firearms, five live cartridges and four cutlasses.
The suspects were arrested at a hideout in Ibadan at about 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, after weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering, the police said in a statement issued on Monday, October 12.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, identified the suspects as Yusuf Adeyemi, 39; Isiaka Kayode, 40; Yusuf Basiru, 35; Adewale Lawal, 38; Saheed Lateef, 36; and Idowu Olanrewaju, 42. They were reportedly arrested at different times or locations during the operation, though the police statement described the arrests as part of the same sustained manhunt.
Items recovered during the operation included five firearms, five live cartridges and four cutlasses. The police said the recovered weapons comprised a fabricated English-made pistol, a revolver pistol, a pump-action gun, a locally made cut-to-size gun and another locally made pistol.
According to the command, the suspects allegedly admitted during interrogation to belonging to a criminal gang responsible for terrorising residents of Ibadan and surrounding areas. The police said the statements formed part of an ongoing investigation and that further inquiries were being conducted to establish the full extent of the gang’s activities.
The suspects remain in police custody as investigators examine possible links to other armed robbery incidents across the state.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led operations against armed robbery and other violent crimes.
He also urged residents to provide credible information that could help security agencies prevent and investigate criminal activities.
The suspects have not been convicted, and the allegations against them remain subject to investigation and due process.
