The Taraba State Police Command has denied reports that a 30-year-old man, Haruna Ishaka, died after his wife allegedly severed his genitals during a domestic dispute in Gashaka Local Government Area of the state. The command said inquiries conducted in the community where the incident was said to have occurred failed to establish that the reported attack took place.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 16, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Victor Mshelizah, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Edwin Ogbeghagha, said officers investigated allegations concerning an incident reportedly involving Ishaka and his 24-year-old wife, Maimuna, in Maigoje village, Mai Idanu Ward, Gashaka Local Government Area.
The allegations had circulated in several Nigerian news reports, which claimed that Maimuna attacked her husband at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2026. The reports further alleged that Ishaka died in the early hours of Tuesday, October 13, following the injuries he sustained.
According to the initial accounts, the alleged incident followed disagreements between the couple over Ishaka's reported relationships with other women. The reports claimed that Maimuna had previously confronted her husband about his conduct and that she subsequently fled the community after the alleged attack. Those claims have not been independently substantiated.
SaharaReporters, in a publication dated October 16, attributed the allegations to a purported police report from the Gashaka Division. Other newspapers subsequently published similar accounts, identifying the couple and providing details of the alleged incident. However, the Taraba State Police Command later issued a statement challenging the accuracy of the reports.
Mshelizah explained that the Divisional Police Officer responsible for the area conducted inquiries in Maigoje village, Mai Idanu Ward and neighbouring communities after the allegations came to the attention of the police. According to the command, the verification exercise did not produce evidence confirming that the incident had occurred.
The police spokesperson further stated that community members and local leaders contacted during the inquiries did not confirm the allegations. The command consequently maintained that it had no verified information establishing the reported attack or the alleged death of Ishaka.
In its statement, the command cautioned members of the public against presenting the circulating allegations as established facts. It emphasised the importance of verifying sensitive reports through appropriate authorities before publication, particularly where allegations could affect the reputation of identifiable individuals.
Commissioner of Police Edwin Ogbeghagha also urged journalists, social media users and other members of the public to exercise caution when disseminating information concerning alleged criminal incidents. He warned against the deliberate circulation of fabricated or unverified reports capable of misleading the public or damaging reputations.
The police denial followed earlier reports that quoted Mshelizah as acknowledging awareness of the allegation and indicating that the Divisional Police Officer was proceeding to the location. The command's subsequent statement, however, said the verification exercise had not substantiated the reported incident.
As of October 17, 2026, the available official police account did not confirm that Haruna Ishaka had died, that Maimuna had committed an assault or that any arrest had been made in connection with the allegation.
The Taraba State Police Command has advised residents to report genuine security concerns to the nearest police station and to rely on verified information when discussing alleged criminal incidents.
