A court in Bauchi State has sentenced eight people to eight years’ imprisonment each after finding them guilty of thuggery and disturbance of public peace in Unguwar Dim, Bauchi metropolis. The convicts were also given the option of paying a fine of ₦370,000 each.

The judgment was disclosed on Saturday, October 17, 2026, by the Bauchi State Police Command following the arrest of nine suspects during a security operation in Unguwar Dim on Thursday, October 15. Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Nafiu Habib, said eight of those arrested were subsequently prosecuted and convicted after pleading guilty to the charges brought against them.

According to Habib, the arrests followed a complaint submitted to the police by the Unguwar Dim Peace and Security Committee on Wednesday, October 14. The committee reported renewed incidents of thuggery in the community, prompting security personnel to undertake an operation targeting individuals suspected of involvement in the disturbances.

Acting on the complaint, a joint team comprising police operatives and community security personnel raided a suspected hideout in the early hours of October 15. The operation resulted in the arrest of nine individuals and the recovery of weapons and other items allegedly found at the location.

The police spokesperson identified the recovered items as machetes, cutlasses, knives, sticks and illicit substances. The command did not disclose the exact quantities recovered or provide additional information concerning the ownership of the items.

Following the operation, investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the arrests and prepared charges against eight of the suspects. Habib said the defendants pleaded guilty when they appeared before the court, leading to their conviction and sentencing.

Each of the eight convicts received an eight-year prison sentence, with the alternative of paying a ₦370,000 fine. The police statement did not identify the convicts by name, specify the particular court that delivered the judgment or disclose the statutory provisions under which they were charged.

The command also did not provide information concerning the ninth person arrested during the raid. It remains unclear from the statement whether that individual was released, remained under investigation or faced separate proceedings.

Reacting to the judgment, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, welcomed the outcome and acknowledged the cooperation between police personnel and community security representatives. He described the collaboration as important to the command's efforts to address thuggery and related criminal activities in the state.

Aliyu reaffirmed the command's commitment to combating violent crime and maintaining public order across Bauchi State. He also assured residents that security operations aimed at protecting lives and property would continue.

The commissioner urged members of the public to provide credible information concerning suspected criminal activities in their communities. According to the command, cooperation between residents and security agencies remains an important part of its approach to preventing and responding to disturbances.

The convictions followed the October 14 complaint, the October 15 arrests and the subsequent court proceedings announced on October 17. The police have not disclosed whether the convicts paid the alternative fines or began serving their prison sentences.
