Suspected armed bandits have killed seven members of a local vigilante group and abducted several residents during an overnight attack on Kaura Namoda town in Zamfara State, leaving families mourning and raising renewed concerns about insecurity in the area.
The attack occurred between Friday night, October 23, and the early hours of Saturday, October 24, 2026. According to residents, the gunmen entered the town through a route near a river and attacked the Kofar Zurmi and Old Market areas, reportedly operating for more than three hours before withdrawing.
The Chairman of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, Munnir Haidara, confirmed that seven members of the local Joint Task Force, a community security outfit established to protect residents, were killed during the attack.
He also confirmed that some members of the security outfit sustained injuries and were receiving medical treatment.
While initial reports indicated that several people had been abducted, subsequent accounts put the number at 38. However, Haidara said the local council was still compiling information to establish the exact number of missing residents.
A resident, Bello Lauwali, said the attackers used an alternative route to bypass defensive positions established by local vigilantes around the town.
According to him, the gunmen blocked access routes and engaged members of the civilian Joint Task Force in a prolonged exchange of gunfire, making it difficult for other security personnel to intervene.
The attack has also generated conflicting accounts about the availability of security personnel during the incident.
A resident, Zayyanu Usman, alleged that the movement of security personnel and vigilantes to Kaduna for President Bola Tinubu's re-election campaign launch had weakened the town's defences.
However, the council chairman rejected the allegation, insisting that those who travelled to Kaduna were political supporters and stakeholders, not security operatives.
Haidara said he personally supervised the arrangements for the delegation and maintained that personnel responsible for protecting the community had not been withdrawn for the political event.
The attack comes amid continuing security challenges in Zamfara, where communities have experienced repeated killings, kidnappings and attacks by armed groups.
In June, suspected bandits abducted students of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, prompting concerns among residents about the safety of educational institutions and surrounding communities.
The latest violence has renewed questions about the effectiveness of security arrangements, particularly the ability to detect armed movements, protect vulnerable communities and respond promptly when attacks occur.
Families of those abducted are awaiting information about their relatives, while the local authorities continue efforts to establish the full extent of the incident.
The identities of the attackers and the precise number of people abducted had not been independently confirmed at the time of this report.
