The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has described the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, as a role model for traditional rulers across Nigeria, commending his leadership and contributions to the preservation of traditional institutions.

The Sultan delivered the commendation through his representative, the Emir of Kagara in Niger State, Malam Ahmed Garba Gunna, during a royal durbar held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, in Benin City, Edo State, as part of activities marking the Oba's 10th coronation anniversary.

“We are following in your footsteps while praying for grace and courage,” the Sultan said in his message to the Benin monarch.

He described Oba Ewuare II as a respected and influential traditional ruler whose leadership had earned recognition beyond the Benin Kingdom.

The durbar featured a colourful display of horsemanship, with Oba Ewuare II riding on horseback from his palace to Garrick Memorial Ground, where he led participants in a ceremonial horse-riding event.

The celebration attracted traditional rulers, palace chiefs, cultural groups and other dignitaries who gathered to honour the monarch's decade on the throne.

Among the visiting traditional rulers were the Imah IV of Somorika Kingdom, HRH Sule Idaiye, and the Ojie of Uneme N'Ekehuan, HRH Oba Felix Collins, both from Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State.

The royal durbar, once an uncommon feature of Benin celebrations, has become a recurring cultural event since Oba Ewuare II ascended the throne in October 2016.

Speaking on behalf of the Benin Traditional Council, its Secretary, Frank Irabor, expressed appreciation to the Sultan's delegation and other dignitaries for participating in the anniversary celebration.

Irabor also acknowledged the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba Omoregie, and veterinary specialists led by Professor Paul Okechukwu for their role in ensuring the welfare of horses and riders during preparations for the event.

Oba Ewuare II, the 40th Oba of Benin, marked his 10th coronation anniversary on October 20, 2026, having ascended the throne on the same date in 2016.

His reign has included efforts to preserve Benin cultural traditions, promote customary dispute resolution and secure the return of historical artefacts taken from the kingdom during the British military expedition of 1897.

The Sultan had earlier congratulated the monarch on the anniversary, describing traditional institutions as important custodians of cultural heritage and promoters of national unity.

The durbar formed part of a wider programme of anniversary activities celebrating the history, traditions and cultural identity of the Benin Kingdom.
