The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the deaths of two people in Ajaokuta following allegations that a police corporal shot his girlfriend before taking his own life.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 9 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026, in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State. The deceased were identified in media reports as Corporal Amos and Woman Corporal Grace, both said to be attached to the Nigeria Police Force.
According to an account reported by SaharaReporters, Amos was assigned to night guard duty at the Ajaokuta Police Division and resumed work at approximately 6 p.m. He allegedly left his duty post several hours later and proceeded to Grace's residential quarters.
The account alleged that he shot Grace before turning the firearm on himself. Both were subsequently reported dead.
A source familiar with the incident alleged that the two had been in a romantic relationship for several years but had recently experienced disagreements involving accusations of infidelity and a breakdown of trust.
The source further claimed that the disagreements had previously escalated into confrontations and threats, prompting intervention by the Divisional Crime Officer, who reportedly advised them to end the relationship.
However, these allegations, including the reported history of their relationship and the circumstances surrounding the shooting, have not been independently established.
Confirming that an investigation was underway, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, Afusat Saliu, told Sunday PUNCH that the command was aware of the incident.
“We are aware of the incident, and the case is currently under investigation; we will update members of the public after the investigation is concluded,” she said.
Saliu declined to confirm whether the deceased were serving police officers, explaining that the command had yet to establish the relevant details.
She also cautioned against concluding that the incident was a case of suicide before investigators completed their work.
The police spokesperson said an official statement would be issued after the command received a conclusive investigation report.
The incident has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including the reported use of a police firearm and the alleged departure of an officer from his assigned duty post.
Investigators are expected to establish the sequence of events, determine the circumstances of the shooting and examine the claims made about earlier disagreements between the deceased.
As of Sunday, October 25, the police had not publicly confirmed the motive behind the incident or issued definitive findings concerning the deaths.
