The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged assault on popular comedian and entertainer Osagie Daniel Idedia, widely known as MC Porkupyne, following an attack by suspected hoodlums in Benin City.
The command confirmed the investigation in a statement issued on Saturday, October 24, 2026, by its spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem. Police said the entertainer was attacked while returning from a party in the Edo State capital.
The Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, ordered an immediate investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
The attack reportedly left the comedian with serious injuries, with accounts indicating that he was receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
The incident has attracted condemnation from entertainers and political figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who alleged that the attack could have been politically motivated.
Atiku, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, called on the police and Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to investigate allegations of political involvement and ensure accountability.
He also urged Amnesty International and foreign diplomatic missions in Nigeria to monitor allegations of violence against opposition supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
An ADC politician, Ekundayo Ukponmwan, alleged that the comedian was attacked because of his criticism of the government and demands for good governance in Edo State.
However, the political motive alleged by opposition figures has not been established by police investigators, and no individual or political organisation has been officially identified as responsible.
Fellow comedian MC Edo Pikin also condemned the attack and expressed concern about Porkupyne's condition.
In its statement, the police command condemned violence and unlawful attacks, urging residents to remain peaceful and cooperate with investigators.
The command assured the public that the matter would receive serious attention and encouraged anyone with relevant information to assist the investigation.
Police have not announced any arrests or publicly disclosed the identities of suspected attackers.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances of the assault, including whether it was connected to the entertainer's political activities or arose from other circumstances.
