Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has restated his administration’s commitment to advancing education through continuous investment in teacher development and the creation of conducive learning environments for students.

The Governor, represented by his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, made this known on Tuesday at the 27th Quarterly Meeting of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Management with the Executive Chairmen of the State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs). The meeting, themed “Bridging the Gap between Planning and Performance towards Achieving Quality Basic Education,” was held at Watercress Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos has continued to prioritise world-class educational infrastructure, highlighting the recent commissioning of ultra-modern classroom blocks, integrated vocational training centres, and digital literacy initiatives under the THEMES Plus Agenda.

“Education is the cornerstone of socio-economic development. When we invest in the education of our children, we are investing in the future prosperity of our nation,” the Governor said. He added that the state is committed to equipping teachers through professional development programmes and ensuring that every child has an enabling environment to learn and succeed.

The Governor acknowledged challenges raised in previous UBEC meetings, including inadequate infrastructure, teacher quality, capacity building, unlocking matching grants, and addressing the issue of out-of-school children. He cautioned that failure to address these concerns could deprive children of a conducive learning environment and teachers of the resources needed to deliver quality education.

He further stressed the importance of evidence-based planning and accountability in education management, explaining that transparent and timely reporting mechanisms would help track progress and ensure that funds are utilised for measurable improvements in learning outcomes.

In her remarks, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Aisha Garba, called on state and local governments to intensify collaboration with communities, parents, and education authorities to guarantee every Nigerian child access to quality education. She particularly emphasised the importance of integrating music education into the basic education framework, describing it as an essential tool for building well-rounded learners.

Garba also highlighted the need for inclusivity, consistency, and strong monitoring mechanisms to bridge existing gaps in the education system. According to her, true progress would only come through commitment, transparency, and sustained partnerships at all levels of governance.

She concluded that every child in Nigeria must be given access to at least the minimum level of foundational learning, insisting that inclusivity and accountability remain critical to ensuring no child is left behind.
