The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today held its 102nd meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, where far-reaching decisions were taken to strengthen the party ahead of its 2025 elective national convention and the 2027 general elections.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the session, the NEC expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness of the party’s organs, chapters, and structures for the convention, scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, from November 15 to 16, 2025. The committee also commended the efforts of the PDP Governors’ Forum, the Board of Trustees, the National Working Committee, and the National Assembly caucus for their commitment to ensuring the success of the exercise.
One of the most significant resolutions was the adoption of the report of the National Convention Zoning Committee, which affirmed that all national party offices currently in the North will remain in the North, while those in the South will stay in the South. By this decision, the position of the National Chairman is retained in the Northern region, while the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 general election has been zoned to the South. NEC also directed the various regions to immediately micro-zone offices within their zones to ensure smooth implementation.
In recognition of leadership efforts within the party, the NEC ratified and confirmed the appointment of Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the PDP with effect from today, a move it said reflects his stabilising role and dedication to repositioning the party ahead of the national convention in November.
The NEC further considered updates from the Constitution Amendment Committee and directed that the draft constitution amendment be circulated across party organs and chapters for wider consultation and input.
Turning to the wider political environment, the PDP NEC condemned what it described as the resort by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to state-backed intimidation, manipulation, and coercion, particularly in the conduct of recent bye-elections in parts of the country. It expressed dismay at the militarisation of polls in states such as Kaduna, Taraba, and Zamfara, warning that such practices reveal the APC’s determination to impose a one-party state, a move it described as a clear and present danger to democracy and the corporate existence of Nigeria.
Reaffirming its commitment to democracy and the wellbeing of citizens, the PDP assured Nigerians that it will continue to work tirelessly to reposition itself as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections. The NEC adjourned its meeting to reconvene for the 103rd session on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
The communiqué was signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP.
