LAFIA, NIGERIA — Security forces in Nasarawa State have recorded a significant breakthrough in the fight against kidnapping and violent crime, arresting six suspected kidnappers and rescuing three abducted victims during a coordinated operation in the Lafia East Development Area of the state. The operation, carried out on January 7 and 8, 2026, was executed by operatives from the Assakio Division of the Nasarawa State Police Command, working alongside local community vigilantes, according to official statements released on Friday.
The victims — two females and one male — were reportedly abducted in Angara village, where assailants had invaded the community and taken them captive, leaving behind an infant. The victims were found unharmed, given prompt medical attention, and reunited with their families shortly after their rescue, the police confirmed.
Police disclosed that the intelligence that led to the operation was received following a complaint about the kidnappings, prompting Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, to order an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators. Acting swiftly, officers tracked the suspects to hideouts in Angara and Fadaman Bauna villages, where they successfully stormed the locations, arrested the suspects and freed the victims.
The suspects have since confessed to their alleged involvement in the kidnappings and have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia for further investigation and prosecution, police said. Authorities reiterated their ongoing commitment to tackling criminality and restoring security across Nasarawa State, particularly in rural communities vulnerable to banditry and kidnapping.
The operation has been welcomed by community leaders and residents, who have repeatedly called for stronger collaboration between security agencies and local vigilante groups to stem the rising tide of violent crime in the region. The success of this raid underscores the importance of timely intelligence sharing and rapid response efforts in countering kidnapping networks in Nigeria’s North Central region.
Police have urged members of the public to continue providing credible information that can aid security operations and help safeguard lives and property in Nasarawa and neighbouring states.
