Ohafia/Umuahia, Nigeria — As preparations intensify for the burial of one of Nigeria’s most eminent Christian leaders, the late Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, political and civic leaders have urged the Abia State Government to formally recognise and preserve his legacy. Former Abia State Governor and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, called on the state authorities to immortalise the late evangelist in a way that ensures his contributions are remembered by future generations.
Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, who died on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80, was an internationally recognised Christian leader and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association. His ministry, which spanned over six decades, was marked by large-scale evangelism, humanitarian outreach, and leadership within the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria. Ukpai’s work touched countless lives across Nigeria and beyond, and he was widely respected for his efforts to improve education, health, and social welfare in communities.
In a statement released on Monday, Senator Kalu described Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai as a spiritual icon whose teachings and humanitarian efforts positively influenced lives nationwide. He emphasised that, with the burial scheduled to take place in Ohafia this week, the Abia State Government should take concrete steps to commemorate Ukpai’s life and contributions. Kalu noted that his life was defined by service, sacrifice, and commitment to humanity, values that are increasingly needed in contemporary society.
The Abia State Government has announced that a state burial service will take place at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, bringing together church leaders, government representatives, dignitaries, and citizens to honour the late evangelist. Officials described Rev. Ukpai as a devoted ambassador of faith whose ministry brought recognition to Abia State and contributed to national and international Christian communities.
Senator Kalu’s appeal aligns with broader discussions on how to honour influential Nigerians who have made significant contributions to public life. Advocates suggest that naming institutions, scholarships, or public initiatives after Rev. Dr. Ukpai would preserve his legacy and inspire future generations to emulate his dedication to service and moral leadership.
Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai’s legacy includes not only his evangelistic work but also his contributions to theological education and community development. He established the Uma Ukpai School of Theology and Biblical Studies in Uyo and other initiatives aimed at empowering individuals through education and faith.
Born on January 7, 1945, in Asaga, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, Ukpai overcame early hardships to pursue education and ministry. His personal journey and commitment to faith and service made him a respected figure in Nigeria and across the globe.
