The National Sports Commission, led by its Chairman, Shehu Dikko, has hosted members of the Nigeria Para Powerlifting Federation at the Commission’s headquarters in the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, following the team’s outstanding performance at the 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships held in Cairo, Egypt — the first-ever edition of the event hosted on African soil.
The visit, which took place on November 11, 2025, was a celebration of Nigeria’s dominance in para powerlifting and a recognition of the athletes who made the country proud on the global stage.
Led by Sunday Odebode, President of Para Sports, the delegation presented the Championship Trophy to Chairman Shehu Dikko and introduced members of the victorious team. Nigeria reaffirmed its world-leading position in para powerlifting with several record-breaking performances.
Among the highlights of the championship was Folashade Oluwafemiayo, who broke her own world record by lifting 168kg to win gold in the +86kg category. Also shining brightly were Rita Ferdinand and Esther Oyema, who each clinched gold medals in their respective events, adding to Nigeria’s medal haul.
Chairman Shehu Dikko commended the athletes and technical team for their discipline, consistency, and dedication, noting that their achievements showcased Nigeria’s strength and resilience in sports. He further reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to the growth of para-sports, emphasizing athlete welfare and institutional support as key priorities.
Dikko also expressed optimism that Team Nigeria would deliver another strong performance in the Para Sports events at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh.
He concluded by stressing that the National Sports Commission remains committed to building a high-performance and inclusive sporting ecosystem, ensuring that every athlete — regardless of ability — has the platform and support to excel globally.
