Daniel Daga, a 19-year-old Nigerian midfielder for Molde FK in Norway and a former captain of Nigeria’s Under-20 national team, has been sentenced to six months in prison by a Norwegian court after being found guilty of committing a sexual act without consent. The verdict was delivered on March 10, 2026, by the Nordmøre and Romsdal District Court, which also ordered Daga to pay 10,000 Norwegian kroner in legal costs.
The case stems from an incident reported to Norwegian police in late April 2025. Daga was charged under Norwegian law for engaging in a sexual act with a person who did not consent. While the court found him guilty, Daga maintains his innocence and insists that the encounter was consensual. His lawyer has filed a notice of appeal, and under Norwegian law, the sentence is not yet enforceable while the appeal process continues.
Molde FK, Daga’s club, confirmed that he has been suspended from training and matchday squads since the investigation began, cooperating fully with authorities. The club described the situation as challenging and emphasized that it is handling the matter with care while respecting the legal process.
Daga rose through Nigerian football, playing for domestic clubs including FC One Rocket, Dakkada FC, and Enyimba FC before moving to Molde FK in early 2025. He had also played a prominent role for Nigeria’s Under-20 team at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, where his performances earned him recognition for his leadership and midfield skills.
The Norwegian court case has cast a shadow over Daga’s career, which was seen as one of Nigeria’s brightest young football prospects. The appeal will allow his legal team to challenge the ruling in a higher court, potentially addressing questions about evidence and consent. Until the appeal is resolved, Daga’s future in professional football remains uncertain, and he will not participate in Molde FK’s matches.
