The Federal Government has announced a seven-year suspension on the establishment of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
The policy, approved at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu, is designed to tackle the underutilisation of existing institutions, overstretched resources, and declining academic standards across the country.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, explained that the current challenge facing the education sector is not access but duplication, poor infrastructure, inadequate staffing, and dwindling enrolment.
He cautioned that the unchecked proliferation of tertiary institutions risks producing ill-prepared graduates and ultimately devaluing Nigerian degrees. According to him, the moratorium will give government the opportunity to upgrade facilities, recruit qualified personnel, and strengthen existing institutions to improve quality.
This move is expected to redirect focus from quantity to quality, ensuring Nigerian higher institutions remain competitive both regionally and globally.
