FG Clarifies Minister’s Comment on ASUU Agreement, Says 2009 Pact Still Binding

The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified recent remarks made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on agreements between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

In a statement issued on Friday, August 29, 2025, the ministry explained that the last formally signed and binding agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU remains the 2009 FGN-ASUU pact.

According to the ministry, while a draft document known as the Nimi Briggs Agreement was produced in May 2021 as part of renegotiations, it was never formally signed by the government and therefore cannot be considered a binding agreement.

The clarification followed Dr. Alausa’s earlier comment suggesting that there had been “no new signed agreement” with ASUU. The ministry stressed that the minister was specifically referring to the 2021 draft, which has not been formally executed.

Reaffirming its position, the ministry assured that the government remains committed to engaging ASUU within a sustainable and lawful framework to ensure universities operate smoothly.

It further urged stakeholders and the public to disregard any misinterpretations of the minister’s statement, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is focused on addressing university sector challenges under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
