The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, has pledged sustained collaboration with UNICEF to drive progress in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector across Nigeria.
Prof. Utsev made the pledge on Friday when he received the new UNICEF Country Representative, Ms. Wafaa Saeed, and her delegation at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. He commended UNICEF for its long-standing support, noting that the partnership aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to the Minister, the Ministry would share a comprehensive record of its achievements in key areas such as dams, irrigation, water quality, and WASH programmes with UNICEF to strengthen joint interventions.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, along with Directors from various departments, echoed the Minister’s assurance, stressing the positive impact of UNICEF’s contributions to initiatives like World Water Day and ongoing sanitation projects.
Speaking during the visit, Ms. Saeed said her mission was to understand the Ministry’s vision and explore ways UNICEF could better support Nigeria’s water and sanitation goals. She highlighted the importance of safe water supply, sanitation, and the untapped potential of water resources for hydropower and other development needs.
She assured that UNICEF would deepen its partnership with the Ministry in promoting access to clean water and improved sanitation services, vital to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
