Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has launched a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening vocational and technical education across the state’s three senatorial zones. The announcement came on Monday during a presentation of a report focused on repositioning technical and vocational education at the council chamber.
Governor Zulum explained that the plan is intended to equip young people with industry-relevant skills, fostering economic growth and narrowing the gap between graduates and the labor market. “The mismatch between our graduates and the labor market is significant,” he said. “To address this, we must establish a strong technical and vocational education system.”
While acknowledging past efforts to provide vocational training, the Governor stressed that more needs to be done. He noted that a committee was set up to reassess and revamp technical and vocational education in Borno State. The committee’s chairman, Alhaji Goni Ibrahim, explained that the review involved site visits, consultations with stakeholders, and comparative studies with other models.
In a move to expand access, Governor Zulum also directed the Ministry of Education to explore introducing technical and vocational education in Sangaya schools, which cater to Almajiri pupils. He praised the cooperation of the Executive Secretary of the Sangaya Education Board in this initiative and lauded the leadership of the Commissioner of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, for his ongoing contributions.
This comprehensive strategy reflects Borno State’s commitment to empowering its youth with practical skills and ensuring educational programs meet the evolving demands of the workforce.
