NAFDAC Issues Alert on Falsified Oxytocin Injection in Nigeria

Published on 2 September 2025 at 09:33

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned the public about an unregistered Oxytocin injection, Gold Vision Oxytocin 10IU, circulating in the market with a fake NAFDAC registration number A4-9566. The product claims to be manufactured by Anhui Hongye Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., located in Bengbu, Anhui Province, China, and marketed by Gold Vision Medicals, No.4 Range Avenue, Independence Layout, Enugu, Nigeria.

The counterfeit product was uncovered during a Risk-Based sampling survey conducted by NAFDAC officers. Further investigations revealed three additional falsified products—A-tocin injection, Extocin injection, and Claxitodin injection—all bearing the same fake registration number and reportedly from the same manufacturer. None of these products appear in the official NAFDAC-registered products database, confirming their falsified status.

Health Risks
NAFDAC warns that using unregistered or falsified Oxytocin injections poses serious risks to both mothers and newborns. These products may contain incorrect doses, no active ingredient, or harmful contaminants. Potential consequences include ineffective uterine contractions, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), and even maternal death. Poor-quality Oxytocin may also fail to control bleeding after childbirth, increasing the likelihood of emergency interventions such as blood transfusions or surgery.

Healthcare professionals and consumers are urged to report any suspected sale of substandard or falsified medicines or medical devices to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or send an email to sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
