In response to the latest annual flood outlook released by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency, which indicated that 30 states are at risk of flooding this year, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the Bayelsa State Emergency Management Agency (BYSEMA) has organized a one-day stakeholders meeting focused on preparedness and response to floods and other emergencies in the state.

The event, held in Bayelsa State, brought together key officials and sector representatives to discuss strategic plans for mitigating the impacts of natural disasters. In his welcome address, BYSEMA Director General, Hon. Walamam Samuel Igrubia, underscored the state’s vulnerability to flooding and emphasized the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to safeguard communities, infrastructure, and the economy. “We have seen the devastating effects of floods, and it is our joint responsibility to take proactive measures to mitigate their impact,” he said.

Hon. Igrubia explained that the meeting aimed to develop a comprehensive preparedness and response strategy, covering early warning systems, coordinated response plans, communication channels, and community awareness initiatives. He stressed that while disasters cannot be completely eradicated, awareness and timely action can significantly reduce their consequences.

Responding on behalf of NEMA, Mr. Eric Ebhodaghe, Head of Operations covering Port Harcourt and Bayelsa State, expressed appreciation to Governor Senator Douye Diri for his support in establishing BYSEMA and facilitating NEMA’s operations in the state. Mr. Ebhodaghe emphasized the importance of collaboration across agencies and sectors, noting that effective disaster management requires the combined resources and expertise of multiple stakeholders.

Stakeholders from security agencies, local governments, and various sectors actively participated, providing contributions and suggestions to strengthen flood preparedness and emergency response strategies. The collaborative discussion was widely praised for enabling participants to align on priorities and establish a clear roadmap for community safety.

In his closing remarks, Hon. Igrubia thanked all partners for their engagement and reiterated the need for community involvement, noting that “disaster management is everyone’s responsibility.” He called on all stakeholders to continue supporting the agencies in raising awareness and preparing for potential emergencies.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Secretary of BYSEMA, Hon. Ayii Aziowei; Directors representing Southern Ijaw, Sagbama, Kolokuma-Opokuma, and Nembe Local Government Areas; the Director of Flood and Erosion Control in the Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Wokoro Erebi Tracey; and representatives of various security agencies.
