In a move to strengthen peacebuilding and sustainable development in Bayelsa State, the government has formally presented office accommodation at the State Secretariat Annex 3 to the Bayelsa State Peace Architecture. The initiative aims to support the agency’s day-to-day operations and deepen efforts to promote lasting peace across the state.

The presentation was made by the Commissioner for Community Development, Hon. Alfred Watson Belemote, through the Ministry’s Desk Officer in charge of NGOs, Mr. Apere Nyenami. Hon. Belemote emphasized that the gesture reflects the administration’s commitment to fostering meaningful collaboration, underscoring Governor Senator Douye Diri’s drive to build sustainable peace in line with the Assured Prosperity Agenda.

The ceremony followed the September 2025 edition of the State Peace Architecture (SPA) monthly meeting and included the inauguration of a Six-Member 2025 World Peace Day Celebration Committee. The committee will raise awareness on sustainable peace under the theme: “Action for Peace: Our Ambition for Global Peace”, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to attract development and investment to the state.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including Permanent Secretaries from the Ministries of Information, Orientation and Strategy, and Youth Development, representatives from the 16 Brigade, Nigeria Immigration Service, NSCDC, Police, DSS, civil society organizations, religious and youth groups, women’s organizations, community leaders, and government agencies. Participants discussed strategies to strengthen peacebuilding processes and address the drivers of conflict in Bayelsa State.

Discussions highlighted the link between unemployment and youth restiveness, with particular recognition given to Search for Common Ground and its partners for launching the Livelihood Initiative across 16 communities in eight local government areas. Stakeholders called for the program’s expansion beyond the initial communities to further mitigate crime and criminality.

Other issues addressed at the SPA meeting included tackling child abuse by parents, substance abuse, theft by night travelers, and the importance of robust collaboration between Community Peace Architecture, Local Government Peace Architecture, and the State Peace Architecture to create a cohesive framework for peace and security.
