The Federal Government has introduced a new framework to strengthen teacher professionalism and education delivery by restructuring the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI).
According to the government’s directive, the NTI will now be primarily responsible for in-service teacher training and community-based professional development initiatives. This means the institute will focus on equipping teachers with modern teaching methods, skills, and continuous learning opportunities that respond to evolving classroom challenges.
Meanwhile, the TRCN has been given the core mandate of regulating the teaching profession nationwide. Its role will include the licensing of qualified teachers, setting and monitoring professional standards, and ensuring that only certified practitioners are allowed to operate within the education system.
Officials noted that the restructuring seeks to create a clear separation of duties between both agencies, reducing overlap while fostering efficiency. The move is also aimed at raising the quality of teaching across the country, ensuring teachers are better prepared to deliver improved learning outcomes.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the realignment, describing it as a strategic step towards restoring dignity to the teaching profession. Analysts believe that with stronger regulation and more structured professional development, Nigerian students stand to benefit from a more competent and motivated workforce of teachers.
This initiative forms part of broader reforms being championed by the Federal Government to reposition the education sector, with emphasis on accountability, professionalism, and global best practices.
