The Federal Government of Nigeria has begun a strategic evacuation operation to help willing Nigerian citizens stranded in Iran reach safety as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate. The move comes in response to an increasingly unstable security situation in the region, which has disrupted normal travel routes and heightened concerns for the welfare of Nigerians living, studying and working there.
Officials say the evacuation initiative is being coordinated by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission working closely with Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Tehran. The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri‑Erewa, confirmed that the evacuation effort was already underway, emphasising that as of the latest updates, no Nigerian has been directly harmed by the ongoing hostilities. Embassy officials have been stationed at key points along the route into Armenia to assist evacuees with documentation and support services, ensuring their safe movement out of Iran.
The Federal Government’s action was prompted by rising geopolitical conflict in the Middle East involving Iran and other regional actors. This volatile environment has made traditional evacuation routes unreliable, forcing many foreign governments to adopt alternative pathways for safely extracting their citizens.
