Troops of the Nigerian Army operating under the Joint Task Force North‑West, codenamed Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have neutralised three terrorists and recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition during a fighting patrol in Zamfara State. The operation, which took place on Thursday, May 7, 2026, was conducted in Kaura Namoda and Birnin Magaji Local Government Areas as part of ongoing efforts to deny terrorists freedom of movement within the state.
According to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North‑West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the troops came into contact with armed terrorists at Doumbourum Village (also referred to as Dumburum). “A fierce firefight ensued,” the statement said, and the troops overpowered the attackers with superior firepower. Three terrorists were neutralised during the encounter, while several others fled the area with gunshot wounds.
Following the encounter, troops conducted a thorough search of the area and recovered a significant arsenal. The recovered items include one AK‑47 rifle, one SK‑21 A1 machine gun, a locally fabricated handgun, six AK‑47 magazines, and one FN rifle magazine. In addition, a total of 571 rounds of assorted ammunition were seized, comprising 123 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 179 rounds of 12.7 x 108mm ammunition on links, and 269 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition.
Another operational report, issued by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), noted the recovery of 571 rounds of ammunition but placed the number of magazines recovered at seven, while also listing six AK‑47 magazines and one FN rifle magazine.
The statement further confirmed that no casualties were recorded among the troops during the operation. The task force described the operation as part of continuing efforts to combat terrorism and criminal activities in the North‑West region, noting that the successes recorded by the troops reflected “their unwavering commitment, resilience, and professionalism.”
The military also assured residents that troops would continue to carry out operations aimed at restoring peace and security to troubled communities in the region.
A separate counter‑insurgency source, Zagazola Makama, had earlier reported that the troops of 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with 1 Brigade Combat Team and Tactical Combat Support elements, conducted an offensive operation against suspected terrorists in Shinkafi Local Government Area on May 4. During that operation, troops made contact with terrorists at Katsira village, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Several terrorists were killed, but three soldiers sustained gunshot wounds and were receiving medical attention.
That operation forced the terrorists to withdraw toward the Fakai high ground, with troops maintaining dominance in the area. However, the May 7 operation in Kaura Namoda and Birnin Magaji resulted in no military casualties.
The task force has called on members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, noting that useful intelligence from residents remains important in tracking terrorists, preventing attacks, and sustaining ongoing operations. The military further urged residents to remain calm and law‑abiding, while assuring them that security forces would continue to protect lives and property across the region.
The operation forms part of a sustained military pressure against terrorists and other criminal elements in Zamfara State under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which has been conducting clearance operations across the North‑West to dismantle terrorist hideouts and restore peace to affected communities.
