A teacher at Federal Government College, Anka in Zamfara State, Mustapha Yahaya Maru, has been killed by armed bandits even after his family paid a ransom for his release. Maru was abducted earlier in May 2026 while travelling to Anka in Zamfara State alongside several other passengers after their vehicle was intercepted by the attackers. According to reports, the kidnappers contacted his family and demanded a ransom that was far beyond what they could easily afford.

After intense efforts and negotiations, the family eventually raised and paid the agreed amount in hopes of securing his freedom. However, instead of releasing him, the armed men killed Maru on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. His death has thrown his family and the community into deep mourning and has heightened concerns over the worsening insecurity in Zamfara State and other parts of the country.

The incident is the latest in a series of deadly attacks by bandits in Zamfara. In a separate attack on Monday, May 18, bandits reportedly killed a driver, abducted two local government officials, and injured another person during an assault along Tashar Lawali Road in Talata Mafara Local Government Area.

The killing of a teacher who had met the kidnappers' ransom demands has been described as tragic and a reflection of the deepening security crisis in northern Nigeria. Authorities have yet to issue a statement on the incident, and no arrests have been reported.
