Okonjo-Iweala Engages Vietnam on Trade Prospects and Fisheries Subsidies Agreement

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), recently held a comprehensive discussion with the Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, H.E. Mr. Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan, accompanied by H.E. Ambassador Phan Dung Mai and the Vietnamese delegation.

The dialogue focused on current trade challenges, Vietnam’s economic and trade outlook ahead of its upcoming Trade Policy Review, and the country’s participation in the Multi-Party Interim Arrangement (MPIA) and Joint Statement Initiatives (JSIs). A key highlight was Vietnam’s confirmation that it will submit its ratification instrument for the WTO Fisheries Subsidies Agreement on 15th September 2025, representing one of the final three ratifications required for the agreement to enter into force.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala welcomed the development, describing it as a major step forward for global fisheries governance and international trade cooperation, while congratulating Vietnam on this milestone.
