The World Trade Organization (WTO) Fisheries Subsidies Agreement officially entered into force on September 15, 2025, marking a historic milestone in global trade and environmental sustainability. This agreement is the first WTO multilateral accord to take effect since the Trade Facilitation Agreement in 2017 and the first international trade framework aimed at ensuring the sustainability of global oceans.
The achievement represents a significant step toward safeguarding marine resources for future generations and advancing Sustainable Development Goal 14.6, which focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources. A photograph from the signing ceremony shows representatives of the 114 WTO member countries celebrating the milestone, holding up their blue nameplates to commemorate the occasion.
The agreement is expected to leave a lasting legacy by promoting sustainable fishing practices worldwide, strengthening international cooperation, and balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship.
