Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, CON, has donated brand-new laptops to 100 journalists who took part in a capacity-building workshop organized in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). The gesture, which came at the close of the three-day training held at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano, was described as a direct investment in strengthening media professionalism and capacity.
Represented at the ceremony by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, the governor urged journalists to remain committed to truth, accuracy, and responsibility in their work. He warned against sensational or inflammatory reporting, stressing that such practices could destabilize the peace and social cohesion that Yobe has worked hard to restore.
Buni explained that the laptops were not merely tools but symbols of the administration’s belief in the vital role of the media as partners in development. “Your words have immense power,” he noted. “In this digital age, I urge you to use your pens and these laptops responsibly. Upholding truth and accuracy is not just a professional obligation but a crucial contribution to sustaining our hard-earned peace.”
Reflecting on the state’s recovery from years of insurgency, the governor highlighted that progress achieved in rebuilding Yobe places an even greater responsibility on journalists to report with fairness and integrity. He emphasized that accurate reportage would further reinforce the foundations of stability, accountability, and development in the state.
Also addressing participants, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Hon. Abdullahi Bego, reiterated the government’s commitment to inclusive growth guided by continuity, consolidation, and innovation. The workshop, which featured paper presentations, practical sessions, and interactive discussions, was designed to sharpen the skills of media practitioners in line with global best practices.
Governor Buni’s closing remarks, coupled with the donation of laptops, underscored the administration’s recognition of the media as a key partner in promoting transparency, accountability, and peace in Yobe State.
