Zeytin, a young gorilla rescued from an illegal smuggling attempt at Istanbul Airport last December, is preparing to make its journey back to Nigeria. The baby primate was intercepted by Turkish customs while being trafficked from Nigeria to Thailand.
During its time in Istanbul, Zeytin has been cared for at a local zoo, where it has thrived and grown into a healthy young gorilla. Authorities say that every effort has been made to ensure the animal’s well-being and proper development.
Fahrettin Ulu, regional director for agriculture in Istanbul, emphasized the importance of repatriating Zeytin to its natural habitat, noting that the move is a major step in protecting endangered wildlife from illegal trade.
The safe return of Zeytin to Nigeria marks a significant victory against wildlife trafficking and highlights the international collaboration required to safeguard vulnerable species.
