The Anambra State Government has pledged full medical support and justice for victims of the recent clash at the Onitsha Main Market.

On behalf of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, on Thursday paid a visit to those injured in the incident who are currently receiving care at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi.

The visit followed Wednesday’s violent confrontation between operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade and some traders at the market, which left three people wounded and one person dead.

During the visit, Dr. Obidike conveyed Governor Soludo’s message of sympathy, stressing that the victims will receive the best possible medical treatment at no cost to their families. He added that the governor had directed the state to cover all hospital expenses and extend financial support to the families affected.

“His Excellency deeply regrets this unfortunate incident. He has asked me to assure you that the government stands with you and your families during this difficult time. Justice will be pursued, and anyone found culpable will face the law,” the Commissioner said.

Governor Soludo, while consoling the bereaved family, also promised a thorough investigation to ensure accountability. He maintained that his administration would not condone any act of recklessness that endangers the lives of citizens.

The state government further expressed gratitude to the police, health workers at the Federal Medical Centre Onitsha, and the NAUTH medical team for their prompt response in handling the emergency. One of the victims, a young boy, is said to be receiving treatment at a private hospital in Onitsha, according to his family’s choice.

Dr. Obidike noted that most of the injured are responding well to treatment and assured that measures will be put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across Anambra while engaging stakeholders to maintain peace and order in the state.
