The National Commissioner and CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, received His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Epe Division, Lagos State, on a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters, in a move aimed at boosting data protection and privacy awareness across Nigeria.

During the visit, Dr. Olatunji welcomed the monarch warmly and praised his dedication to promoting data protection, noting that nearly 65% of Nigerians reside in rural areas, where traditional rulers play a crucial role in raising awareness. He highlighted efforts by the Commission to translate the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) into local languages, ensuring that data privacy information is accessible to all citizens.

Dr. Olatunji also emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to attracting foreign investment, noting that adherence to data protection standards under the NDPA helps reinforce investor confidence. He further elaborated on the Commission’s collaboration with other Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) to safeguard Nigerian citizens’ personal data globally and discussed ongoing capacity-building initiatives, including the domestication of data protection certifications to develop a pool of qualified Data Protection Officers (DPOs). He suggested that such opportunities could also benefit the people of Ilara Kingdom.

Responding, Oba Ogunsanwo lauded Dr. Olatunji’s leadership, describing the NDPC’s work as humanitarian and vital in raising data protection awareness, particularly in rural communities with lower literacy levels. The monarch stressed the dangers of data misuse, which can result in identity theft, business losses, and threats to personal safety.

Oba Ogunsanwo extended an invitation to Dr. Olatunji to speak at the upcoming National Traditional Rulers’ Forum, where he would address traditional leaders from across Nigeria. The monarch reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the NDPC’s mandate and public sensitization efforts, expressing pride in being a royal ambassador for data protection initiatives.
