Contrary to widespread social media reports claiming his death on Friday, former Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, is alive, well, and in good health.
His former Commissioner for Information, C. Don Adinuba, described the circulating claims as “false, mischievous, and capable of causing needless panic.” He confirmed having spoken with Obiano personally, stating, “Obiano has never lived in the United Kingdom. He lives in the United States of America. I just spoke with him now.”
Adinuba urged the public to ignore the baseless rumours, warning that they could “create emotional distress for Obiano’s family, close associates, and the wider Anambra community.” He added, “These unfounded claims are unnecessary and harmful. People should verify information before circulating it.”
The rumours had trended heavily online earlier on Friday, causing confusion among residents of Anambra State and political observers across Nigeria.
Obiano, born on August 8, 1955, in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area, served as governor of Anambra State from 2014 to 2022, succeeding Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate. Since leaving office, he has maintained a largely private lifestyle. Adinuba reiterated that “the former governor remains in the United States, where he has been residing.”
This clarification comes as a reminder to the public to exercise caution when sharing unverified information online, particularly concerning prominent figures.
