Bandits launched a deadly early-morning attack on the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Monday, killing the Vice-Principal and abducting several students.

The assault, which occurred around 5 a.m., sent shockwaves through the community as residents reported that the armed men stormed the school without resistance. A local resident, Aliyu Yakubu, said “The attackers met no resistance as they stormed the school premises,” adding that the bandits opened fire as they moved from one part of the compound to another. “The bandits opened fire as they moved through the compound,” he said.

Vice-Principal Hassan Yakubu Makuku was shot dead while reportedly attempting to protect students from being taken. His death has been described by community members as “a profound loss to the school and the wider community,” especially in an area that has suffered multiple attacks in recent months.

The exact number of abducted students remains unclear, fueling panic among parents and guardians who are anxiously awaiting updates. Residents say fear and uncertainty have now gripped the entire area as families search for information on their missing children.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kebbi State Police Command had not released any official statement regarding the attack. Repeated calls to the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, went unanswered.

With yet another school falling victim to violent insecurity, the incident has reignited national concerns over the safety of children in Nigeria’s vulnerable regions, with many asking: “How many more children must be stolen before real security takes hold in Nigeria’s vulnerable regions?”
