According to eyewitness accounts, the assailant—believed to be mentally unstable—approached the checkpoint in a seemingly harmless manner. In a sudden turn of events, he lunged at one of the soldiers, wrestled an AK-47 rifle from him, and immediately opened fire.
The targeted soldier reportedly died on the spot before his colleagues could intervene.
A witness said the environment descended into panic as commuters abandoned their vehicles and fled for safety. “Everything happened so fast. We just heard a struggle and then gunshots. People were screaming and running,” the witness recounted.
Other soldiers at the checkpoint quickly mobilised, disarmed the attacker, and subdued him. He was later taken into custody for further interrogation and medical evaluation.
Security operatives have since cordoned off the area as investigations continue to determine how the man managed to get close enough to overpower an armed personnel.
The Nigerian Army is expected to release an official statement on the incident, even as residents of Agbowa and the Ikorodu axis express shock over the rare and disturbing breach at a military checkpoint.
