Asaba, Delta State – Nigerian investigative journalist and publisher of Secret Reporters, Fejiro Oliver, has regained his freedom after spending 61 days in police and prison custody in Delta State. He was released this morning, ending a period of detention that began on September 18, 2025.
Fejiro’s arrest followed the publication of reports critical of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Senator Joel Thomas, Senator Ede Dafinone, and Stella Okotete. Authorities charged him with cybercrime and defamation, prompting widespread concern among press freedom advocates.
Two cybercrime charges, filed by the Inspector General of Police at the Federal High Court in Asaba, along with two separate defamation charges filed by the Attorney General of Delta State at the Magistrate’s Court in Asaba, remain pending.
Journalists, civil society groups, and rights advocates have been closely monitoring the case, emphasizing the importance of upholding freedom of expression and due process in Nigeria.
Fejiro Oliver’s release marks a significant development in his ongoing legal battles, though the outcomes of the remaining charges are still awaited.
