Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken a bold step in his ongoing terrorism case by filing a criminal complaint against two witnesses who testified against him. The complaint was submitted just days before the court was set to deliver its judgment on Thursday.
Kanu's lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, filed the complaint in a court in Abuja, accusing the witnesses—known as TAA and BBB—of giving false evidence under oath. Kanu claims that during court hearings held between May and July 2025, these witnesses lied about key facts related to his case.
One of the witnesses, TAA, denied knowing Mr. Brown Ekwoaba, a senior officer in the Department of State Services (DSS) who supervised Kanu’s detention and interviews from 2015 to 2016. Kanu says this is false and has presented affidavits and official records to prove that Ekwoaba was indeed involved.
The other witness, BBB, testified that he only met Kanu in court, but Kanu alleges that earlier testimony showed BBB led a video interview with him at the DSS headquarters in 2021. Both witnesses testified behind masks and screens, supposedly to protect their identity, but Kanu says they lied to hide how the key statements in his case were handled and kept.
Kanu has been in detention since 2015 and is facing serious charges related to terrorism. He previously decided to defend himself in court, saying there was no valid case against him, and he described his detention as illegal. Despite advice from the court to get legal help, Kanu refused, insisting he could handle his case.
The judge, Justice James Omotosho, has scheduled the final judgment for November 20. Kanu has also filed a separate request asking the court to stop the judgment from being delivered.
This legal move by Kanu is based on several Nigerian laws, including sections of the Penal Code, the Criminal Justice Act, and the Nigerian Constitution.
