The governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has spoken publicly about his disagreement with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The disagreement is mainly about who should control the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one of Nigeria’s major political parties.

Makinde accused Wike of trying to create a situation where only one political party, Wike’s, would dominate Nigeria’s politics. Makinde said this idea does not match the founding principles of Nigeria, which was built on a multi-party system that gives citizens options when choosing leaders.

He explained that the fight is bigger than just PDP. It’s about the future of democracy in Nigeria. Makinde warned that the situation might get worse before it gets better but is willing to stay involved for the sake of Nigeria’s democratic system. He said, “If we have to stay here for the next two weeks so that democracy will survive in Nigeria, you will see us here.”

When asked about his past friendship with Wike and their alliance in the G5 group of governors, Makinde criticized focusing on personal issues. He said, “Small minds talk about people. The average mind talks about events.” His focus is on the importance of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy, which gives everyone a choice of leaders.

Makinde also spoke about the recent crisis within PDP and a clash at the party’s national secretariat. He assured members and Nigerians that he is offering “a message of hope, real hope” for the future of the party and Nigeria.
