The Lagos State Government has intensified its drive to improve maternal and child health, distributing more than 300 food packs and essential vitamin supplements to indigent pregnant women across Health District IV. The intervention, coordinated by the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, aims to ensure healthier pregnancies and better outcomes for mothers and infants in vulnerable communities.

At the distribution event held at Akerele Primary Healthcare Centre in Surulere, the Permanent Secretary of the Office, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, said the initiative reflects the state’s long-term plan to secure the wellbeing of future generations. She stressed that a stronger Lagos begins with proper care from conception.

According to her, the Lagos State Government recognises that “to build a peaceful, progressive, and secure Lagos” it must ensure that every child is given a fair chance to survive, grow and become a responsible citizen. She added that global research shows that the foundational years—from the womb through early childhood—shape a person’s development and future potential.

Shasore further disclosed that since the programme was introduced, over 6,280 pregnant women have benefitted across Lagos’ six health districts, underscoring the administration’s commitment to supporting mothers, infants and children.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of Health District IV, Dr Abimbola Bowale, described pregnancy as “a remarkable journey of hope, anticipation, and boundless love.” He noted that while the journey can be demanding, the state remains determined to give mothers and their babies a healthier start through targeted nutrition and health support.

The Mother, Infant and Child Development Programme, he explained, was designed to boost neonatal brain development and help indigent expectant mothers navigate pregnancy safely.

The event featured the distribution of nutritious food packs, vitamins, and supplements aimed at reducing malnutrition and strengthening maternal health within the Surulere community.

The initiative reinforces the Lagos State Government’s ongoing efforts to build a healthier and more resilient population under the A Greater Lagos Rising agenda.
