The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of schools across four local government areas following fresh intelligence warnings about rising insecurity in parts of Kwara South. The affected LGAs—Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun and Ekiti—were directed on Wednesday to suspend all academic activities until further notice.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State Wing, confirmed the development in an urgent circular issued the same day. According to NUT Chairman, Yusuf Agboola, the union moved swiftly based on “instructions from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development,” after security reports pointed to emerging threats in the region. The directive, addressed to all local NUT chairmen, stressed the need for immediate compliance to safeguard pupils, teachers and school property.

The sudden closure has triggered mixed reactions among parents and educators. While some applaud the government’s proactive approach to preventing potential attacks, others fear the long-term academic impact on thousands of learners already recovering from previous disruptions.

As security agencies work to restore calm and strengthen surveillance, many residents are asking how soon it will be safe for schools to reopen. For now, the government insists that safety must come first.
