The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed deep concern over the escalating wave of insecurity across the country, warning that the recent surge in attacks on schools poses a grave threat to the future of Nigeria’s children and the survival of the nation’s education system.

In a statement on Thursday, the student body condemned the repeated abductions of pupils and teachers, particularly in northern states, describing the situation as “a national emergency that requires immediate, coordinated action.”

NANS said the increasing vulnerability of schools to armed attacks is creating fear among parents, discouraging enrolment, and forcing many institutions to shut down or operate under dangerous conditions.

> “The persistent attacks on schools across Nigeria are putting the lives of our children at risk and undermining the very essence of education. No nation can progress when its young people are unsafe in classrooms,” the statement read.

The association called on the Federal and State governments to urgently strengthen school security architecture, deploy more personnel to vulnerable communities, and invest in early warning systems to detect threats before they occur.

NANS also urged security agencies to intensify rescue operations for abducted students and ensure that perpetrators of school attacks are brought to justice.

The body warned that Nigeria faces long-term consequences if the education sector continues to be destabilized, stressing that millions of children risk being pushed out of school due to fear, trauma, and displacement.

“This is not just an attack on schools; it is an attack on the future of our nation. Government must rise to the occasion before the situation becomes irreversible,” NANS added.

The association further called for national unity, community vigilance, and greater accountability from leaders at all levels to safeguard the country’s learning spaces.
