Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has reaffirmed his commitment to work closely with military authorities to ensure the safe rescue of the schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School (GGCSS) Maga, Danko Wasagu Local Government Area.

The Governor made this promise on Friday during a visit to the Government House in Birnin-Kebbi, where he received the Minister of State for Defence, Muhammad Bello Matawalle, along with senior military officials.

Governor Idris thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ordering top security officials and the Minister of Defence to immediately come to Kebbi to coordinate rescue efforts. He praised the President’s swift response as a sign of the Federal Government’s strong commitment to bringing back the missing girls.

The Governor expressed confidence in the ongoing efforts, citing the Minister’s proven track record in handling security challenges during his time as Governor of Zamfara State. He assured that the government is doing everything possible to support the rescue mission.

Since taking office, Kebbi State has prioritized security by providing vehicles and motorcycles to security agencies, which has helped improve safety in southern Kebbi. This has led to displaced residents returning to their communities and resuming farming.

During the visit, Governor Idris informed the Minister that soldiers stationed at the school withdrew around 3:00 p.m., and the abduction occurred shortly after, at about 3:45 p.m. He described this as a troubling development, especially since a security meeting had just been held, during which additional deployment and collaboration with security agencies were agreed upon.

The Governor called for a thorough investigation to determine who authorized the troop withdrawal and stressed the importance of preventing such lapses in the future.

In response, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, acknowledged the presence of high-ranking security officials in Kebbi and emphasized the seriousness of the situation. He informed the Governor that President Tinubu had directed him and top military commanders—including the Theatre Commander of Operation Fansan Yamma, Brigadier General Idris Warra—to come to Kebbi and lead the rescue efforts.

The Minister assured that significant progress is expected soon, with security personnel being deployed across Kebbi, Zamfara, and Niger States to block escape routes and speed up the rescue. He urged residents to remain calm and assured that additional manpower and equipment are already being mobilized.

Finally, the Minister called for full cooperation from the communities and the Kebbi State Government to ensure a coordinated and successful rescue operation.
