A yet-to-be-identified police officer has allegedly shot and killed a teenager known simply as DMX in the Alakia area of Ibadan, Oyo State, sparking grief in the community and renewed anger over recurring police violence.

Residents said the incident occurred when the officer, described as “trigger-happy,” fired his weapon during an encounter in the Alakia axis. The bullet reportedly struck the teenager, who died shortly after the attack. Witnesses expressed shock, noting that the victim was unarmed and posed no threat at the time of the shooting.

The killing has further heightened public frustration over what many describe as a disturbing pattern of reckless firearm use by security agents in Oyo State and other parts of the country. Community members are calling for the immediate identification and arrest of the officer involved, as well as a transparent investigation that will hold all responsible parties accountable.

Civil society advocates say the latest incident highlights systemic failures in police oversight and training, warning that without urgent reforms, avoidable deaths will continue to occur. They emphasised that the victim’s family deserves justice and that citizens must be protected from those meant to defend them.

Authorities were yet to issue an official statement at the time of filing this report.
