Former Bayelsa State Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to grant him a new date to honour its invitation, claiming he is currently battling a medical emergency that makes him unable to appear before investigators.

Sylva, who was recently declared wanted by the anti-graft agency over an alleged $14.8 million fraud linked to his time in office, wrote directly to the EFCC chairman explaining that he is suffering from what he described as a “life-threatening health condition” that requires urgent treatment.

Sources familiar with the investigation say the EFCC issued the wanted notice after Sylva repeatedly failed to appear despite earlier invitations. However, the former governor insists he is not evading accountability, stressing that his absence was unavoidable and strictly due to his health crisis.

In his letter, Sylva appealed for understanding and assured the commission of his readiness to fully cooperate once he becomes medically stable. The EFCC has yet to release a public response or indicate whether it will accept his request for a new appearance date.

The development adds a new twist to a high-profile case already attracting national attention, as questions grow about the next steps in the EFCC’s probe and Sylva’s ability to stand before investigators while facing a serious medical challenge.
