Troops in Benue State successfully stopped an attempted kidnapping along the Makurdi–Kura road on Wednesday evening. During a gunfight between soldiers and suspected bandits, a driver lost his life.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. when a group of engineers traveling from Kura to Makurdi came across armed men blocking the road, intending to abduct passengers in a bus ahead of them. Fortunately, soldiers on routine patrol, who were behind the engineers’ vehicle, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun duel. The bandits fled into the nearby bushes to escape.

Tragically, during the exchange of gunfire, Ochoche Otokolo Ekwu, the driver of the engineers’ vehicle, was hit by a stray bullet and died instantly. The police and security operatives responded swiftly, with the Divisional Police Officer of ‘D’ Division leading a patrol team and tactical units to the scene. The body of the deceased was recovered and taken to a mortuary in Makurdi.

Authorities are now combing the surrounding bushes to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent any further attacks along this route. The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in the area, but the military and police remain committed to protecting travelers and residents.
