A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a lawsuit brought by Tigran Gambaryan, the former Head of Financial Crime Compliance at Binance, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Gambaryan had claimed that he was unlawfully and excessively detained by security agents and sought compensation and legal costs.

However, Justice Umar Mohammed ruled that the court would not interfere with the Nigerian authorities’ investigation and prosecutorial roles, especially in cases involving suspected foreign exchange violations and money laundering connected to Binance. The judge emphasized that it is the responsibility of security agencies and prosecutors to handle such cases.

Gambaryan filed the suit against both the EFCC and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), alleging that his detention was prolonged and unjustified. During the court proceedings, EFCC lawyer Olanrewaju Adeola stated that Gambaryan’s detention was lawful, based on charges of money laundering and foreign exchange violations.

Adeola also described Gambaryan’s lawsuit as “a gross abuse of court processes,” and the court agreed, dismissing the case. The judge confirmed that the Nigerian authorities’ investigation and detention of Gambaryan were lawful and within their powers.
