President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is hosting an extraordinary virtual summit of ECOWAS leaders to discuss the recent coup in Guinea-Bissau. The meeting aims to address the situation, ensure regional stability, and strengthen cooperation among member states.
The coup, which occurred on November 26, saw military officers seize power, suspend institutions, and halt the electoral process. ECOWAS and African Union observers have expressed concern, urging the armed forces to release detained officials and allow the electoral process to proceed .
Tinubu's leadership has been instrumental in promoting peace and democracy in West Africa. During the summit, he emphasized the need for regional economic transformation, stating, "The era of warm pit to the port must end. We must turn our mineral wealth into domestic economic value, jobs, technology, and manufacturing" .
The summit will focus on addressing pressing security challenges and strengthening regional cooperation. ECOWAS has condemned the coup, calling for the restoration of constitutional order.
