Northern Nigeria’s political and traditional leadership has moved into urgent action as rising insecurity continues to grip the region. Governors and traditional rulers from across the North convened an emergency security summit on Monday in Kaduna, seeking a coordinated response to the escalating violence affecting millions.
The meeting, currently underway at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, is hosted by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani. It brings together the Northern States Governors’ Forum and the Northern Traditional Leaders Council for high-level deliberations.
Chairman of the Governors’ Forum and Gombe State Governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, is presiding over the session. The traditional institution is being led by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, signalling the seriousness of the situation and the need for partnership between state authorities and cultural custodians.
Behind closed doors, leaders are discussing the worsening security climate across the North—an environment marked by persistent bandit attacks, terrorism, widespread kidnapping, and clashes between farmers and herders. These crises have resulted in heavy loss of life, mass displacement, and the steady breakdown of economic activities in affected communities.
Monday’s gathering is expected to produce a unified strategy aimed at restoring peace and stability, alongside renewed commitments from northern leaders to confront insecurity collaboratively rather than in isolation.
As northern leaders gather behind closed doors, one truth remains clear: communities cannot afford another cycle of promises without decisive action. The region’s future depends on what comes after this meeting.
This emergency meeting is long overdue. What matters now is whether these resolutions will translate into real security for the millions who live in fear every day
As the region waits for the outcome, the meeting stands as one of the most critical engagements yet, underscoring the urgency of finding sustainable solutions to Northern Nigeria’s deepening security crisis.
