Ezimo community in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, home to Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, was thrown into panic over the weekend as armed kidnappers carried out violent attacks, shooting women and abducting several residents.

The attacks reportedly spilled over into the nearby community of Obollo-Eke, where gunmen ambushed guests returning from a wedding, taking them captive. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos, noting that the assailants moved with apparent impunity.

The Ezimo attack occurred close to a military checkpoint along the Ikem–Obollo-Afor federal road. Despite the presence of security personnel, witnesses said the kidnappers operated for hours without resistance, firing at moving vehicles, seizing victims, and escaping through bush routes toward the Benue border.

These incidents highlight the growing insecurity in parts of Enugu State, raising concerns over the effectiveness of local security measures and the vulnerability of communities near major roads.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the attacks or the status of the abducted victims.

Stone reporters observed that Ezimo and Obollo-Eke communities in Enugu have once again fallen prey to ruthless kidnappers, with women shot and residents abducted over the weekend. How long will communities remain at the mercy of armed criminals?

“The brazen attacks near military checkpoints underscore a worrying spike in insecurity in Enugu State. Immediate action is needed to protect citizens and restore public confidence in local security operations.”
