The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to replicate the democratic principles that guided Nigeria’s recent intervention in Guinea-Bissau within the country’s political landscape.

The party noted the federal government’s action to grant temporary asylum and protection to Fernando Dia Da Costa, an opposition presidential candidate in Guinea-Bissau, following credible threats to his life. According to the PDP, this move, communicated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, and his media aide Alkasim Abdulkadir, reflects Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace, stability, and democratic governance in West Africa.

While acknowledging this gesture, the PDP urged President Tinubu to ensure a similar protection of democracy internally, warning that anti-democratic practices are undermining political competition in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by Comrade Ini Ememobong, PDP National Publicity Secretary, the party emphasized that although the President is not expected to assist opposition parties directly, he has a constitutional duty to maintain a free, open, and competitive political environment.

“The philosophical underpinning that catalysed Nigeria’s intervention in Guinea-Bissau should also guide the President’s conduct domestically to safeguard Nigeria’s electoral democracy from decline and prevent the slide toward a one-party state,” the PDP said.

The party concluded by urging immediate action, stating: “The President must act promptly in defence of democracy in Nigeria. He cannot present himself as a defender of democracy in the sub-region while enabling anti-democratic practices at home that undermine democratic institutions and processes.”

The PDP’s call comes amid growing concerns over the integrity of Nigeria’s political space as the country approaches future elections, with analysts emphasizing the importance of strengthening democratic norms and curbing political coercion.

PDP calls on President Tinubu to practice at home what Nigeria did in Guinea-Bissau—protect democracy, stop political coercion, and safeguard opposition parties. Democracy is for all, not just abroad.

As Nigeria watches, the PDP urges urgent action to ensure the country’s political space remains free, fair, and competitive. Can President Tinubu show the same commitment to domestic democracy as he did regionally? #DemocracyFirst #StoneReportersNews
